Recent intelligence assessments suggest that Iran possesses the resilience to withstand a U.S. naval blockade for up to four months. This CIA report, according to a U.S. official familiar with the analysis, indicates that American economic pressure on Tehran may not be as immediately effective as hoped, at a time when diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict appear to be stalling.
Fighting has intensified in and around the critical Strait of Hormuz, the site of recent flare-ups. The United Arab Emirates reported that its air defenses intercepted Iranian missiles and drones on Friday, resulting in moderate injuries. This follows renewed Iranian attacks on the UAE and other Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases, escalating tensions in the region.
Washington is currently awaiting Iran’s response to a U.S. proposal aimed at formally ending the war. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed anticipation for a reply, while Iran’s foreign ministry stated they were still considering the proposal.
Amidst these developments, the U.S. military reported striking two Iranian-linked vessels attempting to enter an Iranian port. Iran, meanwhile, accused the U.S. of breaching a ceasefire, with Tehran claiming fatalities and injuries following a U.S. naval action against a commercial ship. Oil prices saw an increase, with Brent crude futures rising above $101 a barrel.
In parallel with diplomatic initiatives, the U.S. has also tightened sanctions. The U.S. Treasury announced new sanctions targeting individuals and companies in China and Hong Kong for allegedly aiding Iran’s military in acquiring weapons and drone components. The Treasury Department reiterated its readiness to impose further economic measures against Iran’s military industrial base and any foreign entities supporting illicit Iranian commerce.
