The Ugandan media landscape recently marked World Press Freedom Day with its sixth annual Uganda Media Sector Working Group (UMSWG) awards ceremony. This year’s event celebrated outstanding achievements in journalism, highlighting the courage and skill required in the field.

The “Journalism Lifetime Achievement Award” was presented to two veteran war reporters, John Muto Ono P’Lajur and Sheila Kawamara Mishambi. Their awards recognized their harrowing efforts in documenting the civil wars in Northern Uganda and Rwanda, respectively. Reporting from dangerous and chaotic environments, they bore witness to immense suffering and historical turning points, often at great personal risk.

In addition to recognizing the intensity of war reporting, which was described as the “pinnacle of journalistic endeavor,” the awards also acknowledged contributions to media development. The Institutional Award was given to the Media Challenge Initiative (MCI) for its work in training young journalists in digital content creation and solutions journalism.

The awards also previously honored individuals and organizations for their unique contributions. These include news vendor Baylon Katahikire for his role in the print distribution chain, journalist Edward Baliddawa for his pioneering work in online media, and Justice Kenneth Kakuru for his advocacy for freedom of speech and access to information.

Past recipients of the “Journalism Lifetime Achievement Award” and “Institutional Award” also include figures like Abdu Katuntu, Ben Bella Illakut, Edward Baliddawa, Justice Kenneth Kakuru, James R. Tumusiime, Wafula Oguttu, Dr. Zadok Ekimwere, Drake Sekeba, UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Uganda Media Women’s Association, and Uganda Media Council.

These “Wall of Fame” awards serve to acknowledge the vital role journalists play in informing the public and upholding the principles of a free press.
