Uganda Christian University (UCU) is spearheading major improvements at the Namugongo Anglican Martyrs site as Uganda prepares for the annual June 3 Martyrs Day celebrations. The university has taken on the responsibility of organizing this year’s event and is using the opportunity to upgrade key facilities.

The upgrades focus on enhancing water supply, sanitation, and crowd management to ensure a better experience for the expected thousands of pilgrims and to prevent health issues. A new solar-powered borehole and a 50,000-litre water tank have been installed to bolster water availability, supplementing the National Water and Sewerage Corporation’s services.

Additionally, perimeter walls have been repaired, washrooms modernized, and new sanitation facilities constructed. Walkways and access roads are being paved, and solar-powered security lighting and improved signage are being installed. The site’s museum has also undergone refurbishment to elevate the visitor experience.

UCU aims to create a well-maintained and modern environment for pilgrims, akin to its own campus standards. The works, estimated to cost approximately Shs4 billion, are being carried out by contractors under the university’s supervision, with most expected to be finished by mid-May.
