Kampala, Uganda – A significant security breach at the Bank of Uganda has led to the arrest of two individuals, including a teenager. The suspects are allegedly responsible for a break-in at the central bank’s Kampala headquarters and the theft of seven high-end laptops.
Nineteen-year-old Boaz Kule, from Wabigalo, and his purported accomplice, Ramadhan Kabuye, also known as Rhama, were apprehended by law enforcement officials from the Crime Intelligence and Criminal Investigations Directorates. Police have stated that the suspects are linked to the burglary, which is being described as a coordinated operation.
Details regarding how the suspects managed to infiltrate one of the nation’s most secure institutions remain undisclosed as investigations are ongoing. However, sources suggest that several Counter Terrorism police officers have been detained to assist investigators in determining if there was any internal involvement.
The security lapse, which occurred overnight and was reported on May 4th, has raised serious concerns about the security protocols and internal controls at the Bank of Uganda. Investigators believe the perpetrators may have remained undetected on the premises for nearly three hours, fueling speculation of insider assistance.
In the wake of the incident, security agencies conducted a crackdown on several arcades in downtown Kampala, searching for outlets suspected of dealing in stolen electronics. This operation led to the arrest of at least 20 individuals.
This latest event follows previous controversies involving financial and security incidents at the central bank. In 2024, a substantial sum of money reportedly went missing from the bank and was later traced to overseas accounts, resulting in the arrest and charging of several officials.
