Police in Busia District have apprehended a man who identified himself as ‘God’ following an alleged violent incident at the local police station. The 40-year-old suspect, Godfrey Were, also known as Nasaye, is accused of attempting to attack police officers with a panga on Thursday morning.
According to reports, Were arrived at the Busia Police Station shortly before 6:00 AM, initially appearing to want to report a case. However, he is alleged to have suddenly produced a panga, reportedly hidden in his gumboots, and made attempts to slash the officers at the counter. A boda boda rider who witnessed the suspect’s arrival described him as appearing unkempt and carrying a stick.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a commotion and gunshots from inside the station. Police officers stated they first fired warning shots before shooting the suspect in the right leg to subdue him. Busia District Police Commander, Mr. Peter Mugabi, confirmed the incident and the subsequent arrest.
Were, a resident of Mugungu B in Busia Municipality, denies attempting to attack the officers. He asserted to journalists that he was at the station to deliver a message of repentance, stating, “I am ‘God’, and I was at the police station to know who they serve and to make them repent their sins.”
During the arrest, police also recovered bundles of marijuana from the suspect. Officers noted that he had pieces of cloth tied to his hands, which were suspected to be linked to witchcraft. The motive behind the alleged attack is under investigation.
The suspect has been transferred to Busia Health Centre IV for treatment while the police continue their inquiries.
