The city of Mbarara was filled with a somber atmosphere as mourners gathered at Nyamitanga Cathedral for a requiem mass honoring the life of John Bosco Kazoora, a highly respected gospel composer and musician. Kazoora passed away earlier this week at the age of 64, reportedly due to complications from diabetes.

Mbarara Catholic Archbishop Grace Lambert Bainomugisha led the emotional service, paying tribute to Kazoora’s significant contributions to spiritual transformation and church ministry through his music. The Archbishop highlighted Kazoora’s dedication, noting that he never sought financial gain from his extensive work, which has resonated across Uganda.

In a significant move to preserve his artistic achievements, the Archdiocese announced plans to launch a hymn book featuring Kazoora’s compositions. This initiative stems from Kazoora’s own desire to have his prolific body of work, which includes over 600 liturgical hymns in Runyankore-Rukiga and English, formally documented. The church has pledged to fulfill this wish.

Colleagues and family members fondly remembered Kazoora as a devoted Christian, father, and mentor whose talent was a gift to many. His children spoke of a home filled with music and faith, while his widow described him as a dedicated servant of God. Kazoora, survived by 15 children, will be laid to rest in Kabagoma Village.
