Kalangala District is set to hold a by-election for its Woman Member of Parliament after the passing of incumbent Helen Nakimuli. A notable thirteen women have stepped forward to vie for the position, signaling a competitive race ahead.

Eleven of these aspiring candidates are seeking to represent the National Unity Platform (NUP). This includes Irene Nampala, sister of the late MP, alongside others like Jessica Nasiwa Tusabe and Dr. Mary Nakitende, who are actively pursuing the party’s ticket.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has indicated its intention to field Aidah Nabayiga, their previous flag bearer, without holding new primaries. The NRM chairperson for Kalangala District expressed confidence in Nabayiga’s chances, citing her strong performance in the last election.

The Democratic Party (DP) is currently assessing its options and consulting with members to identify a potential candidate, and may consider supporting the NUP candidate if no suitable contender emerges.

The Electoral Commission has confirmed that preparations for the by-election are underway. A stakeholders’ meeting is being held to outline the electoral roadmap, guidelines, and legal requirements for the process.

Local analysts suggest that candidates with deep community ties and strong financial backing are likely to have an advantage in Kalangala, an archipelago district where effective campaigning requires significant resources.

Residents have expressed mixed reactions, with some acknowledging the difficulty in replacing the late MP while supporting their preferred candidates. The focus remains on the selection processes within the major political parties and the ultimate choice of the electorate.
