Botswana’s government has announced the passing of former President Festus Mogae, who died at the age of 86. The nation has declared three days of official mourning in his honor.
Mogae, an economist by profession, led Botswana from 1998 to 2008, succeeding himself to his vice president, Ian Khama, in a peaceful transfer of power that reinforced the country’s image of political stability.
During his tenure, Mogae was recognized for his adept management of Botswana’s economy. He also notably confronted the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which had a significant impact on the nation, by initiating one of Africa’s most extensive programs to combat the disease.
Born in Serowe on August 21, 1939, Mogae pursued his education in Britain before entering Botswana’s civil service shortly after the country gained independence in 1966. He held positions as finance minister and vice president before ascending to the presidency.
Mogae concluded his presidential term after serving the maximum two terms permitted by the constitution, stepping down voluntarily.
