Bishops from Uganda’s Ankole sub-region have initiated the countdown to a significant milestone, announcing the upcoming 90th-anniversary celebrations of the East Africa Revival movement. This influential spiritual renewal, which began in western Uganda in the 1930s and subsequently spread across the region, is being commemorated as a pivotal spiritual and socio-economic event.
The launch event, held at the Ankole Diocese headquarters in Mbarara City, saw bishops detailing the movement’s impact. They highlighted how the revival championed repentance, holiness, and moral transformation, effectively dismantling tribal, cultural, and gender barriers within the Church.
Leading the launch were bishops Rt Rev Sheldon Mwesigwa (Ankole Diocese), Rt Rev Nathan Ahimbisibwe (South Ankole Diocese), Rt Rev Johnson Twinomujuni (West Ankole Diocese), Rt Rev Alfred Muhoozi (North Ankole Diocese), and Rt Rev Amos Magezi (North West Ankole Diocese). They emphasized that the movement’s influence extended beyond the spiritual realm, fostering broader social change which included promoting cleanliness, hard work, honesty, and compassion.
The four-day celebrations, scheduled for August 26-30, 2026, are anticipated to draw over 7,000 participants from across East Africa, with an estimated budget of Shs1 billion. The event is expected to feature the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, along with international guest preachers and speakers, serving as a platform for evangelism and spiritual reawakening.
