A disturbing case has emerged from Mitooma district in western Uganda, where a woman stands accused of severe child abuse. Juliet Tushabeomwe, 45, has been remanded by the Chief Magistrate’s court on charges including aggravated torture and attempted murder.

Prosecutors allege that between August 2025 and April 2026, Tushabeomwe forced her eight-year-old stepson, Samuel Akamumpa, to ingest a harrowing number of sewing needles – reportedly 46 – along with pieces of broken glass. This alleged abuse took place in Rweibare village.

The child began experiencing severe health complications approximately two weeks prior to the case coming to light. Medical examinations, including X-rays and a CT scan, revealed the presence of multiple metallic objects within his stomach and digestive system.

Akamumpa underwent surgery at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors successfully removed the 46 needles. He is currently admitted to the pediatric ward and is reported to be recovering. A relative, Eunice Birungi, has appealed for a thorough police investigation to ensure justice for the young victim.

Tushabeomwe denied the charges when she appeared before grade one magistrate Gibson Muhangi. She has been remanded to Mitooma Prison until June 11, 2026.
