President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has once again demonstrated his commitment to the Muslim community by sponsoring 150 individuals for the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. This initiative, a significant gesture of support for one of the five pillars of Islam, will see the selected pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia.

The first group of 90 pilgrims was officially flagged off from Kampala by Mr. Moses Byaruhanga, Senior Presidential Advisor in-charge of Political Mobilisation. He expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his continued generosity towards the Muslim faithful.

State House has collaborated with the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) to ensure a transparent selection process, allowing regional Muslim leaders to nominate eligible pilgrims. Mr. Byaruhanga emphasized that the entire Hajj offer is funded by the President, warning pilgrims against parting with money for facilitation.

This year’s sponsorship, which covers an average cost of Shs21 million per pilgrim totaling over Shs3 billion, is an increase from the usual 100 slots. The President also highlighted alternative economic empowerment programs for Muslims, such as interest-free SACCOs, as an alternative to the Parish Development Model for those concerned about riba.

Pilgrims were urged by Haji Faruk Kirunda, Special Presidential Assistant-Press and Mobilization, to remain focused on their spiritual journey and avoid tourist-like behavior. They were also advised to maintain dignity and respect Saudi Arabian laws to avoid any issues.

Various stakeholders, including travel agencies Tawakal Travels and Anwaary Travels, expressed their thanks to President Museveni for facilitating this crucial religious obligation for citizens who might otherwise be unable to afford it. Pilgrims shared their joy and gratitude for the opportunity to fulfill this fundamental tenet of Islam.
