A recent assessment by Makerere University School of Public Health reveals that only 38% of Ugandan women are satisfied with reproductive, maternal, and child health services. The findings come from an early evaluation of the EMPOWER programme, run by Pathfinder International in 50 districts.

While maternal mortality has fallen from 400 to 189 deaths per 100,000 live births and facility-based deliveries have risen, Prof. Nazarius Mbona Tumwesigye stressed that these figures still miss global targets like the UN’s SDG goal of 70. Neonatal mortality stands at 22 per 1,000 live births, nearly double the target.

Low satisfaction stems from long waits, poor service quality, and missing supports. Notably, 75% of women did not receive gender-based violence or psychosocial aid, essential for comprehensive care.

Urban areas like Kampala see higher maternal deaths due to referrals of severe cases, explained Dr. Deogratius Migadde from the Ministry of Health. Regional disparities show high teenage pregnancies in Busoga, Lango, and Bukedi.

Family planning awareness is high, but uptake is 37.5%, with injectables at 42% and pills at 24.6%. Barriers include distance (29%), costs (27%), provider coercion (21%), and stigma (29%).

Only 45.9% of facilities support disabilities, and data inconsistencies plague reporting. Experts call for health worker training, better inclusion, and system strengthening.

The findings were shared at a Kampala dissemination event featuring Prof. Frederick Makumbi and Ritah Waddimba of Pathfinder International.
