Sylvia Mwebesa Kajubi’s path to becoming deputy principal at the Insurance Training College (ITC) Uganda embodies resilience and bold career shifts. As the first-born in a family of five, she shouldered early responsibilities that honed her organizational skills and sense of leadership.
Initially aspiring to accounting like her father, Kajubi switched to land surveying at Makerere University, practicing briefly before entering academia. She spent 15 years at Uganda Christian University, advancing from administrative assistant to academic registrar while marrying and raising four children.
Balancing late-night work, studies, and family demanded grace and spousal support. ‘You explain to your family what the journey requires,’ she notes, with her children witnessing her dedication to exams and deadlines.
After outgrowing UCU, she transitioned to ITC 11 years ago in the unfamiliar insurance education field, rising from exams head to academic registrar and now deputy principal—the first woman in this senior role.
Battling impostor syndrome, Kajubi relied on others’ belief in her potential. Today, she mentors women via platforms like Women In Insurance (WIN) and ITC’s leadership program, urging them to shatter self-imposed barriers in a sector where women are scarce at the top.
Her leadership style emphasizes inclusion, empathy, and collective decision-making, especially among mostly male staff.
