Rose Birungi, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kamuli District, has strongly denied reports circulating on social media about a supposed government program distributing free wives along with essentials like food, roofing sheets, and bedding to men.

She highlighted how confused individuals rushed to her office, presenting their national IDs in hopes of receiving these items, including women. Birungi stressed that no such initiative exists and warned residents to stay cautious.

Local leaders echoed the dismissal. Willy Mbode, chairperson-elect of Mbulamuti Town Council, said the rumors spread at burial ceremonies, with some LCI chairpersons falsely endorsing them as a solution to economic hardships in eastern Uganda.

A villager from Isagazirya, Bakali Mutoto, initially believed the claims from his LCI chairperson but was corrected by the Deputy RDC, Adonia Mafumo. The misinformation has proliferated via WhatsApp groups and village talks, preying on the vulnerable in one of Uganda’s poorest districts.

Kamuli faces severe poverty, with a 37.1% monetary poverty rate, high illiteracy, food insecurity, and a subsistence economy reliant on farming and fishing.
