The High Court in Ggaba is poised to issue its ruling this morning on Christopher Okello Onyum, a 38-year-old man charged with the brutal murder of four young children at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Programme. The April 2 incident, which claimed the lives of Gideon Eteku, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Ignatius Sseruyange, and Ryan Odeke, sent shockwaves across Uganda.
This landmark trial unfolded over three weeks in an unprecedented mobile court session held right in the affected community, reportedly at President Museveni’s directive to ensure locals could observe the proceedings firsthand. Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha will decide if prosecutors met the burden of proof beyond reasonable doubt or if Okello’s insanity plea stands.
Prosecutors, led by Jonathan Muwaganya, called 18 witnesses, relying on DNA evidence tying Okello to the kitchen knife used in the attack, CCTV footage of his movements, call data records placing him at the scene, and eyewitness accounts from two daycare staff. A post-incident medical exam deemed him mentally fit, countering his claims.
Okello maintains he lacked intent due to mental illness, supported by two defense witnesses including his brother, who noted a prior eight-month stay at Butabika Hospital. Three court assessors recently recommended conviction, finding the prosecution’s case solid.
A guilty verdict carries the death penalty by hanging. The decision will shape Okello’s future and deliver closure for the grieving community.
