The High Court in Uganda has imposed the death penalty on Christopher Okello Onyum for slaughtering four young children at the Gaba Early Childhood Development Centre. The victims, all under three years old, were Ryan Odeke, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Gideon Eteku, and Ignatius Sseruyange.
Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha ruled that the crime’s gravity justified the harshest punishment, labeling it a ‘rarest of the rare’ case. She believed the attack was a ritual blood sacrifice targeting defenseless infants in broad daylight at their school sanctuary.
Onyum showed no remorse in court, refusing multiple chances to apologize to the grieving families, some of whom collapsed during proceedings. His defense highlighted his sickle cell anaemia, broken family background, and farming in Nwoya as a first-time offender, but the judge dismissed these as irrelevant to the premeditated brutality.
Prosecutor Jonathan Muwaganya detailed a calculated massacre using sophisticated planning, leaving trauma on witnesses. The judge noted Onyum could have killed more if not caught and warned others involved in human sacrifice against such acts.
This marks one of Uganda’s severest recent sentences, amid concerns over rising homicides, with over 4,000 annual deaths per police reports. No civilian executions have occurred since 1999.
