Renowned Ugandan musician Edirisa Musuuza, better known as Eddy Kenzo, has expressed strong support for the newly assented Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Act, 2026. He described it as a significant achievement for the nation’s creative industry.

In a post on his official X account, Kenzo highlighted how the law stems from long-standing efforts by artists to secure better protection and fair pay. He thanked President Yoweri Museveni for approving the bill, but warned that true success hinges on effective rollout.

“This is progress, but the mission continues,” Kenzo stated, underscoring the ongoing fight for full enforcement and economic gains for creatives.

The act brings major updates, including anti-piracy measures, enhanced enforcement, and alignment with global standards. Justice Minister Norbert Mao, who introduced the bill, called it a transformative force for creators with stricter penalties for violations.

Key changes include a new revenue split for caller ring-back tones: 60% to authors and performers, 31% to telecom firms, and 8.5% to aggregators. The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) also endorsed the reforms for boosting monetization and curbing piracy losses.

Despite the optimism, Kenzo and others insist that without solid implementation, the law’s potential may fall short.
