The United States government has contributed $75 million, equivalent to about Shs280 billion, to bolster humanitarian aid in Uganda. This funding targets refugees, host communities, and individuals hit by severe acute malnutrition due to ongoing drought and a measles outbreak.

Channelled through the Eastern and Southern Africa Humanitarian Fund and overseen by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the money supports initiatives coordinated by the UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda.

It enables partners to provide essential services including food distribution, nutrition support, healthcare, protection, shelter, and water, sanitation, and hygiene to tackle the most pressing needs.

UN Resident Coordinator Leonard Zulu expressed gratitude, noting the high life-saving demands for nearly 2 million refugees and vulnerable groups. He highlighted the fund’s role in ensuring transparent, accountable delivery of aid.

Uganda grapples with a deteriorating crisis fueled by drought in Karamoja, regional displacement, floods, landslides, and service shortages, exacerbating food insecurity and straining public resources.

Portions of the funding will combat child malnutrition risks in Karamoja and maintain vital services for refugees in hosting districts, averting further service breakdowns and preventable deaths.
