Uganda Prisons Service Promotes 4,996 Junior Officers Nationwide

The Uganda Prisons Service announced the promotion of 4,996 junior officers on Tuesday, highlighting their commitment to duty.

Spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja stated that these promotions follow the service’s three-year cycle and were approved by the 36th Prisons Council to match existing vacancies in the prisons structure, which employs 14,300 personnel nationwide.

The Commissioner General praised the officers, noting their well-deserved advancement based on discipline and performance. Newly promoted staff, from Warder/Wardress to Principal Officer I, are encouraged to maintain high professionalism.

Breakdown includes 139 to Principal Officer I, 196 to Principal Officer II, over 800 to Chief Warder/Wardress ranks, 1,512 to Sergeant Warder/Wardress, 633 to Corporal, and 1,679 to Lance Corporal.

This is one of the largest such exercises recently, compared to 4,329 promotions in 2023. Senior officer promotions are expected soon, with those missing out considered next cycle.

The initiative aims to boost motivation and efficiency in the correctional system.
