Uganda’s oil sector is making rapid strides toward first oil production, even as the precise start date remains undisclosed. At the Kingfisher field, the Central Processing Facility stands at more than 99% complete, with 18 wells drilled across three pads following a successful campaign ending in February 2026.

Industry leaders express optimism ahead of the 11th Annual Oil and Gas Convention in Kampala. Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals CEO Humphrey Asiimwe stated that the country is on track for a 2026 milestone, emphasizing sustainable benefits for decades.

The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) prioritizes long-term readiness over exact timelines. Corporate affairs manager Gloria Sebikari highlighted progress across the value chain, including Tilenga, Kingfisher, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline, and Kabalega Industrial Park developments for refining and logistics.

Uganda holds 1.65 billion barrels in recoverable reserves, aiming for peak output of 190,000 barrels per day. Officials stress institutional, technical, and economic preparedness, with the sector already securing $2.3 billion in contracts and 21,000 direct jobs under the national content program.

Success, per PAU, will be gauged by enduring value, aligning with the 2008 National Oil and Gas Policy and 2025 National Petroleum Policy.
