A tragic electrocution in Kabalagala, Kisasizi Parish, claimed the life of 35-year-old Dominic Olwoy, a father of five and construction helper. The incident occurred Monday evening, leaving the neighborhood without electricity.
Eyewitnesses reported that Olwoy had showered upon returning home and was retrieving clothes from a wire mesh when he was shocked. He was rushed to Ken Medical Clinic and later referred to Kibuli Muslim Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Kabalagala Parish chancellor-elect Isa Bin Ismail highlighted the risks of illegal connections in slums, where many bypass meters due to high costs and delays in legal processes. He noted Olwoy as the fifth victim, with prior cases often unreported.
Vice chairperson Hawa Ali called on landlords to install proper wiring and pressed the government to streamline legal electricity access, emphasizing the life-threatening dangers of makeshift setups.
The power outage has hit businesses hard, with a chicken seller lamenting spoiled stock due to no refrigeration. Residents pointed to a local fixer named Musa, who charged for illegal taps and fled after the incident.
Local officials plan a meeting this week with Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to resolve the blackout and promote safe connections. Olwoy’s body will be taken to Tororo for burial.
