A somber atmosphere enveloped Parliament on the morning of April 22, 2026, as gloomy weather mirrored the mood of lawmakers and staff preparing for the arrival of Hon. Helen Nakimuli’s remains. The Kalangala District Woman MP passed away on April 19, 2026, at a private hospital in Kampala.
At 10:00 AM, Speaker Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua, Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama, and other MPs received the casket at the South wing parking. Nakimuli’s father, Reverend Father Christopher Walusimbi of the Orthodox Church, arrived with family, evoking deep sympathy among mourners.
Known as a dedicated sportswoman who captained the Parliament Women’s Volleyball team and played netball and basketball, her hearse was escorted by the sports community, who formed a guard of honour from the main gate. Dressed in black, crowds filled the foyer where her remains lay in state, with many shedding tears.
Speaker Among and Deputy Tayebwa consoled the family and signed the condolence book. Nakimuli’s final plenary contribution on April 15, 2026, urged State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang to prepare Uganda for co-hosting the 2027 African Cup of Nations, questioning timelines for venues like Hoima Stadium.
Her remains were set to return to the House at 2:00 PM for legislators to pay final tributes.
