Atletico Madrid hosted Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, ending in a hard-fought 1-1 stalemate marked by two penalties.
The match was cautious and tactical from the start, with Atletico controlling possession. However, in the 44th minute, David Hancko fouled Viktor Gyokeres in the penalty area, allowing the Swedish striker to convert from the spot past Jan Oblak, giving Arsenal a halftime lead.
Atletico responded quickly after the break. In the 56th minute, VAR detected a handball by Ben White on Marcos Llorente’s shot, and Julian Alvarez slotted the penalty into the top corner beyond David Raya to level the score.
Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar later, while Arsenal had a late penalty decision reversed following a VAR check. The winner of this tie will meet either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final on May 30 in Budapest, where PSG holds a 5-4 advantage from their first leg.
