Ugandan Volleyball Teams Face Tough Round of 16 Tests at CAVB Championship
Nemostars and Sport-S have advanced to the knockout stage of the CAVB Men’s Club Championship in Kigali, with Nemostars making history as the first Ugandan side to top their group. Ugandan volleyball powerhouses Nemostars and Sport-S have qualified for the Round of 16 at the ongoing CAVB Men’s Club Championship in Kigali, Rwanda. Both teams are aiming for the quarterfinals in the knockout phase.
Nemostars achieved a historic milestone by topping their group with 12 points. The six-time league champions secured straight-set victories over Petrojet, Nigeria Customs, Black Rhinos, and Litto Team of Cameroon in their final group match, overtaking hosts APR after the latter lost to Petrojet.
Sport-S clinched third place in their pool with a hard-fought 3-2 win against Cameroon Sports, marking their third victory in five matches.
The Round of 16 kicks off Wednesday morning at BK Arena. Nemostars take on Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) at 11am in an intense East African derby. KPA, despite finishing fourth in Group C, boasts experienced players that will test Godfrey Okumu’s squad. Star opposite Daudi Okello will be key for Nemostars.
Sport-S faces Rwanda Energy Group (REG) at 1pm. REG, coached by former Sport-S head Benon Mugisha and captained by ex-Sport-S player Thon Maker, won four straight after an opening loss and enters as favorites.
All four Rwandan teams also advanced, setting up a competitive knockout stage with tougher matches ahead.
Full Round of 16 fixtures include: Nemostars vs KPA (11am), REG vs Sport-S (1pm), Police vs Nigeria Customs (3pm), Kepler vs GSU (5pm), Al Ahly vs Kalibi (7pm), FUS Rabat vs APR (9pm), plus PAD vs Equity (3pm) and Petrojet vs Ghana Army (5pm) at Petit Stade.
