Uganda’s journey to producing its first barrel of crude oil is generating buzz, yet the precise date stays under wraps, likely known only to President Museveni. Sector experts anticipate first oil around July or October 2026, though some predict a shift to 2027.
Ahead of the 11th Annual Oil and Gas Convention in Kampala, Uganda Chamber of Energy and Minerals CEO Humphrey Asiimwe expressed pride in witnessing this milestone. He emphasized the need for the country to maximize benefits over the next 20-30 years. The event will review national readiness, engage investors, and discuss opportunities in the production phase.
The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) stresses getting preparations right for sustainable success. Corporate Affairs Manager Gloria Sebikari highlighted ongoing advancements in the Tilenga and Kingfisher projects, including drilling, construction, and infrastructure. The East African Crude Oil Pipeline and Kabalega Industrial Park in Hoima are also progressing well.
Investments total $2.3 billion (Shs8.5 trillion) in contracts, creating 21,000 direct jobs and up to 81,000 including indirect ones, per UCEM estimates. PAU notes significant technology transfer and capacity building for locals, training institutions, and SMEs.
PAU is promoting joint ventures for local expertise embedding, technology transfer, and Ugandan participation in operations. The regulator commits to transparent oversight of national content, skills development, and local targets.
Uganda’s recoverable reserves stand at 1.65 billion barrels, with peak production eyed at 190,000 barrels per day.
