Uganda’s representatives at the CAVB Men’s Club Championship in Kigali, Rwanda, have advanced to the Round of 16 after strong group stage performances.
Nemostars were the first to qualify, bouncing back from a 3-0 defeat to hosts APR by defeating Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos on Sunday. Led by attackers Daudi Okello and veteran George Aporu, the team has already surpassed last year’s 19th-place finish in Libya.
Sport-S clinched their spot on Monday in a tense five-set battle against Cameroon Sports. They took the opener 25-23 but dropped the next two, trailing 2-1. Strong net defense from Emmanuel Okia and Jonathan Tumukunde fueled a comeback, securing the fourth set 26-24 and the decider for a 3-2 victory.
Sport-S ended group play with a 3-2 record, beating Equity Bank of Kenya, AS INJS of Cote d’Ivoire, and Cameroon Sports, despite losses to Al Ahly and Kepler.
Favorites like Egypt’s Al Ahly, Morocco’s FUS Rabat, and Rwandan sides Police, Kepler, and APR are expected to vie for the title, which wraps up on Saturday. Round of 16 matches begin Wednesday.
