The Ministry of Works and Transport unveiled a new helmet usage guide targeting boda-boda riders and passengers to combat deadly road accidents.
Boda-bodas are essential for transport and jobs in Uganda but top the list of crash causes. Uganda Police’s 2025 crime report shows 2,525 motorcyclists among 5,383 road crash deaths.
Partnering with Safe Way Right Way, the ministry notes certified helmets cut death risks by 37% and prevent 65% of severe head injuries. Yet, many users skip helmets or wear them wrong.
The guide offers tips on picking and fitting helmets correctly to spark safety habit changes.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura stressed boda-boda users’ vulnerability, urging enforcement, awareness, and passengers to insist on helmets.
Commissioner Winstone Katushabe represented State Minister Fred Byamukama at the launch.
