UAE Exits OPEC and OPEC+ Amid Iran War Tensions, Shaking Oil Cartel Unity
The United Arab Emirates has announced its withdrawal from OPEC and OPEC+, striking a significant blow to the oil producers' groups led by Saudi Arabia during a period of global energy disruption from the Iran war. The decision stems from frustrations over regional support amid Iranian threats and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. The United Arab Emirates declared its departure from both OPEC and the broader OPEC+ alliance on Tuesday, delivering a major setback to the organizations and their key influencer, Saudi Arabia. This move unfolds against the backdrop of the ongoing Iran war, which has triggered a severe energy crisis and rattled global markets.
UAE Energy Minister Suhail Mohamed al-Mazrouei explained that the choice followed a thorough evaluation of the nation’s current and future energy production strategies. He confirmed no discussions occurred with Saudi Arabia or other members beforehand.
Gulf oil exporters, including the UAE, face challenges exporting via the Strait of Hormuz—a vital route for one-fifth of global crude oil and LNG—due to Iranian threats and vessel attacks. Despite this, Mazrouei downplayed the market impact of the exit.
The decision boosts U.S. President Donald Trump, who has long criticized OPEC for driving up oil prices and exploiting U.S. military protection for Gulf allies. It also reflects UAE dissatisfaction with inadequate political and military backing from fellow Arab and Gulf states against Iranian aggression.
UAE presidential diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash voiced sharp criticism at the Gulf Influencers Forum, lamenting the historically feeble response from the Gulf Cooperation Council and Arab League.
