FIFA is poised to enhance funding for teams participating in the 2026 World Cup, responding to calls from European associations over rising costs like travel, operations, and taxes in host nations including the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The governing body has engaged in discussions with national associations worldwide to increase revenues, including higher financial contributions for the 48 qualified teams and boosted development funds for all 211 members. These proposals are slated for approval at the FIFA Council meeting on April 28, 2026, in Vancouver.

This move comes after FIFA announced a record $727 million prize pool in December, guaranteeing each team at least $10.5 million and the winner $50 million. The tournament, set for June 11 to July 19, is projected to generate over $11 billion in revenue.

Earlier reports highlighted FIFA’s $100 million cut to World Cup operations, sparking worries among host cities, many of which have scaled back plans. Only Houston and Philadelphia in the US are proceeding with original festival setups.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed the ongoing talks ahead of the meeting, aiming to finalize details before the FIFA Congress on April 30.
