Akena and Kabasweka Dominate President's Cup at Entebbe Club

Joseph Reagan Akena, the 2024 Uganda Amateur Open champion, secured his first victory of 2026 at the President’s Cup held at Entebbe Club. The handicap -1.6 golfer triumphed in the match-play final against Samuel Bazaale by 4&3, claiming the largest share of the Shs10m prize pool.

Akena advanced by beating Amon Bwambale 1-up in the semifinals and Abdallah Kakooza 5&3 in the quarterfinals. He adapted to challenging rainy weather and soft greens over three days, staying patient and relaxed against familiar opponent Bazaale. ‘I feel ready for any other event,’ Akena shared post-victory.

In the ladies’ division, Peace Kabasweka dominated Meron Kyomugisha 6&5 in the final. She progressed past Winnie Musuya 4&3 in the semis and received a quarterfinal walkover from Gloria Mbaguta.

Other highlights included nearest-to-pin wins by Alex Craig Muwanguzi (men) and Berna Musanabera (ladies), longest drive by Edward Okech (men) and Musanabera (ladies), plus senior winners Maxi Byenkya (34 pts, ladies) and Charles Kabunga (37 pts, men). Group stage leaders featured Alex Coutinho, Geoffrey Byamugisha, Eric Kawere in men’s groups, and Berna Musanabera, Florence Namuganza in ladies’.
