Uganda’s Sport-S volleyball club, celebrating 30 years and seven national league titles, stepped onto the continental stage for the first time at the CAVB Men’s Club Championship in Kigali, Rwanda.

The team started with nerves, dropping the opening set to Kenya’s Equity but rallying to win 3-1 (15-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20). Captain Dickens Otim, the squad’s most experienced player, highlighted the initial lack of confidence against new opponents on this big platform.

“This is the biggest platform on the continent. The CV has improved,” Otim told Daily Monitor. He came off the bench to provide leadership, helping the team build momentum.

Sport-S then faced tougher competition, losing in straight sets to hosts Rwanda’s Kepler (25-22, 25-17, 25-20) and Egypt’s Al Ahly (21-25, 10-25, 22-25). Player Duke Kyomukama, who scored 16 points against Equity, emphasized the exposure’s value.

“What we came for is what we are getting, the exposure,” Kyomukama said. Despite missing key players like setter Moses Odeke, opposite Gum Malil, and middle blocker Ian Akampa, Sport-S remains competitive in Group B and in contention for the Round of 16.

The camp sees this debut as a key learning opportunity.
