Soroti City’s health department is ramping up efforts to combat HIV following 220 new infections recorded among young people from January 2025 to January 2026. Dr. Alfred Anyonga, the city health officer, highlighted the alarming trend, noting that daily infections occur and untested cases could double the figure.

The infections predominantly affect youth engaging in unprotected sex, raising urgent concerns. Dr. Anyonga revealed that collaborations with schools, cultural, and religious leaders are underway, including drama groups, health clubs, and talks to boost awareness.

Mr. Isaac Ekellot, the HIV Focal Point Person, announced partnerships with the Ministry of Health, Uganda AIDS Commission, and TASO for a multisector approach targeting adolescent girls and young women aged 10-24. The first phase involves stakeholder training, risk profiling, HIV testing, reproductive health education, and PrEP distribution.

Dr. Maureen Kwikiriza from the Uganda AIDS Commission confirmed Soroti’s 11.6% HIV prevalence, far exceeding the national 4.9% average. She stressed immediate action to prevent surges, aligning with the national goal to end HIV as a public health threat by 2030. The pilot, backed by TASO and The Global Fund, leverages community structures for tailored interventions.

Ekellot urged youth to know partners’ status, use condoms, or abstain.
