The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has praised Bujagali Energy Limited (BEL) in Buikwe district for its strong performance in the energy sector.

ERA Executive Director, Eng Ziria Wako, noted during an annual inspection that the 250MW Bujagali hydropower plant fully complies with its operational license conditions. She expressed satisfaction, stating the facility exceeds its designed 96% annual output by reaching 99% production.

The plant also stands out for hiring 97% Ugandan employees and maintaining a spotless environment. BEL secured a 32-year contract to run the station starting January 2012.

Eng Wako dismissed any link between BEL and recent load shedding, blaming transmission issues on outdated equipment from the transmission company.

ERA board member Eng Elias Kiyemba indicated that BEL’s excellent standards could lead to approval for using excess dam water to boost power generation further.

BEL General Manager Alaister McDougall credited modern electro-mechanical systems, asset management, and standardized safety protocols for the plant’s reliable 13-year operation at full capacity.
