Ditching Camping for Comfort: My Birthday Wish List
A writer shares her aversion to camping as a birthday getaway option, preferring simple indulgences like lounging on the couch with cake and tea over roughing it in the wild. She questions why anyone would choose tents, insects, and discomfort when modern comforts are available. It’s birthday season again, and at this stage in life, the author and her husband skip surprises. Gifts are requested upfront and approved based on the family budget.
Surprises feel exhausting now—no one has the energy to fake enthusiasm. Instead, the ideal present is permission to relax in sweatpants, feet up, savoring cake and tea while watching mindless TV. These low-key joys suit their current phase perfectly.
A weekend getaway caught her eye online, priced affordably, but it turned out to be a campsite. She’s deathly allergic to camping; the mere suggestion makes her feel sick.
Campers, she wonders, why choose misery? Why trek far to sleep in a flimsy tent amid cold, rain, sun, and swarms of mosquitoes, without proper facilities? She tried it once in her youth and vowed never again—unless fleeing a nagging spouse or authorities.
The hunt persists for a proper retreat with memory foam pillows, plush mattresses, running water, and all modern amenities. Camping? Absolutely not.
