Aid organisation ADRA Uganda kicked off the 2026 ADRA Run, a community event designed to highlight and tackle challenges facing girls in Northern Uganda. Scheduled for May 10 at Metroplex Mall in Naalya, it includes 10km, 5km races, and a 2km Children’s Fun Run open to runners from various sectors.
ADRA Programmes Director Benon Babumba described the run as more than a sporting occasion, calling it a powerful advocacy platform. He focused on persistent issues in areas like Agago, Amuru, Lamwo, Kitgum, and Pader, where girls endure forced marriages, teen pregnancies, dropouts, and poor access to services despite years of intervention.
The theme ‘Run to Save Her Future’ urges government, communities, and partners to act. ADRA partners with groups like ADRA Sweden, Global Affairs Canada, and Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on health, mental well-being, and empowerment initiatives.
Event coordinator Timothy Ahimbisibwe detailed safe routes through Naalya and Kiwatule, expecting 200-300 participants. Security features police, marshals, medical support, and guardian oversight for kids, with minimal traffic risks.
Country Director Elder John Mwanza linked the run to ADRA’s global ‘Every Child Everywhere in School’ push since 2019. He highlighted stats on dropouts and pregnancies, aiming to expand into a sustained effort across 10 districts for school retention and re-entry support.
Kits cost Shs25,000, targeting Shs200 million, but leaders prioritise messaging over funds. Sponsors like ICEA, Site Travels, and the Seventh-day Adventist Church are involved, building on global precedents.
“Every step runs for a girl in danger—join us on May 10,” Mwanza urged.
