On April 18, Uganda’s film community gathered for the Filmmakers Mix and Mingle, dubbed the Actors & Producers Edition. The event served as a vital networking space, where filmmakers, actors, producers, and enthusiasts shared ideas and formed potential partnerships.

Beyond initial connections, panels delved into critical topics including intellectual property, branding, distribution, and regulatory insights from the Uganda Communications Commission. A live recording of The Front Row podcast added raw, open dialogue.

Talent manager Dorothy Nabunjo stressed that talent makes up just 20% of success, with the rest being business savvy. She advised actors to view themselves as brands, constantly marketing their careers and building strategic teams.

Actor Mark Agume urged rethinking ambitions locally rather than chasing global Oscars, emphasizing daily self-promotion. Shakif Nekambuza of Play It Loud pointed out poor marketing and lack of release strategies, leaving many films unseen despite quality production.

Debates touched on authenticity versus global appeal, using Squid Game as an example. The event’s climax was a heated podcast session exposing issues like sexual exploitation, unpaid work, and unfair contracts, signaling deep industry tensions.

Organizer Douglas Benda Kasule aims to link filmmakers with sectors like law, banking, and insurance for broader support. Attendees left with new collaborations and a clearer view of the hard work ahead to strengthen Uganda’s cinema.
