Key Causes Behind Surgery-Related Deaths in Uganda

Inadequate patient preparation and anaesthesia errors are leading triggers for fatal outcomes during surgical procedures, as illustrated by real cases from Ugandan hospitals. Proper pre-operative checks, monitoring, and blood management are essential to prevent such tragedies. Failure to adequately prepare patients for surgery can lead to devastating consequences, particularly in major operations requiring general or regional anaesthesia.

In one incident at a top Kampala private hospital in 2010, a 34-year-old woman passed away at the start of laparoscopic fibroid removal when the breathing tube was mistakenly inserted into her stomach, causing oxygen deprivation and heart slowdown.

Another case involved a Senior Four student in 2015 at a regional referral hospital. Scheduled for minor hernia repair, he underwent rushed surgery without overnight fasting. Post-operation, aspiration of stomach contents into his lungs proved fatal due to insufficient monitoring.

Surgical deaths often stem from the underlying condition, uncontrolled bleeding, poor post-op surveillance, or anaesthesia mishaps. Major surgeries demand thorough pre-anaesthetic assessments, informed consent, and blood availability to mitigate risks like vessel punctures or clotting failures.

Anaesthesia complications dominate, with general types risking airway failures or dosage imbalances leading to suffocation or cardiac arrest. Regional options like spinal or epidural anaesthesia carry dangers such as severe hypotension or nerve injury.

Close monitoring of vital signs immediately after surgery is critical to detect issues early and save lives.
