A severe storm battered Bikonko village in Namasagali Sub-County, Kamuli district, on Friday night, displacing 327 people and demolishing homes in Bubiriki, Buyengere, Bukabi, Bukaaya, and Bugulu.

Elderly resident Yosefina Bikufa, 67, narrowly escaped harm with her daughter’s help when winds ripped off her house and kitchen roofs. She thanked providence for sending her eight grandchildren away beforehand, but now worries about sleeping arrangements in their cramped kitchen.

Christopher Sooka Ngobi faced similar devastation, with parts of his recently roofed home—funded by the Parish Development Model—scattered in trees. His kiosk goods are soaked, compounding his struggles as a caregiver for orphans.

Local vice chairperson Godfrey Apuuli highlighted the timing, as maturing food crops were ruined, raising hunger fears. He appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister for urgent shelter and food aid to aid recovery.

Namasagali LCIII Chairperson-elect Richard Mutuuya linked the recurring storms—common in even-numbered years—to climate change from sugarcane farming, charcoal production, and tree felling. Stranded families are sheltering at Busambu Primary School, needing iron sheets and essentials to rebuild.

Kamuli Chief Administrative Officer Ben Lawrence Marley confirmed receiving the report and plans to submit detailed damage stats to the OPM on Monday.
