Tororo RDC Suspends Eviction Over Contested 3.2-Acre Land in Malaba

The Resident District Commissioner in Tororo has stopped an eviction order targeting two families on a disputed 3.2-acre plot in Malaba Town Council, following a State House directive for a fact-finding probe. The halt addresses claims that the land was fraudulently sold twice by the same individual. The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Tororo, Sadik Bategana, has refused to approve an eviction order affecting hundreds of residents in Amoni “A” cell, Asinge Ward, Malaba Town Council.

The order, left by his predecessor Nickson Owole, targeted two extended families on a 3.2-acre disputed plot. Bategana cited a direct instruction from State House to launch a fact-finding exercise before any action.

He quoted the directive verbatim, emphasizing the need to investigate encumbrances on the land for the benefit of locals. This came after complaints from affected families and leaders, who say the eviction lacks merit.

The conflict stems from a 2009 sale of the land by Paproba Isaac Ejakait to brothers Japel Etyang (72) and Anthony Oisre (62). The same seller allegedly resold it in 2016 to Peter Ajeko Omayodi.

Multiple court bailiffs sought Bategana’s endorsement, but he stood firm. At a meeting in Malaba Town Council offices, he stressed verifying ownership facts and cautioned against dishonest land deals.

Tensions escalated with reported attempts by security to enforce the eviction, leading to protests and appeals to higher authorities. Mass evictions remain a concern across Uganda, requiring security clearances including from the RDC.

The ongoing probe will guide future steps in resolving the dispute.
