Over 1,000 Fishermen Jobless After Vessel Ban on Lake Edward

A presidential directive has slashed fishing vessels on Lake Edward from 100 to 33, suspending 67 boats and putting more than 1,000 livelihoods at risk in Rukungiri District. While aimed at curbing overfishing and protecting stocks, the move sparks economic fears among locals awaiting government aid. Authorities in Rukungiri District have suspended 67 fishing vessels on Lake Edward, leaving over 1,000 people without jobs. The action follows a presidential order to limit operations to just 33 boats, down from 100, to regulate the industry and safeguard dwindling fish populations.

Resident District Commissioner Buroni Kikanshemeza announced the enforcement at Rwenshama landing site, giving operators until April 27, 2026, to comply. He emphasized the directive targets illegal practices like overfishing, substandard nets, and invading breeding areas to ensure the sector’s long-term viability.

District Fisheries Officer Dan Mugyenyi Byamugisha called for adherence, noting government plans to assist through SACCOs for alternative ventures, despite the immediate hardship.

Local leaders highlighted the crisis, with Bwambara Sub-county Chairperson Christopher Kagayano stating each vessel supports about 25 workers. “This will cause major problems for families,” he warned.

Fishermen voiced desperation. Gideon Arinaitwe, supporting five children and two wives, fears going hungry. Single mother Sowedi Amidu warned of potential deaths without fishing income, while Nasari Amina lamented the loss of their sole livelihood.

Some support the restrictions. Rukungiri Municipality Mayor Charles Makuru believes proper implementation will replenish stocks and boost the industry.

Communities now brace for uncertainty as enforcement prioritizes sustainability over short-term gains.
