NUP Debates Court Challenges Amid Election Rigging Claims

The National Unity Platform (NUP) faces internal divisions on whether to pursue election petitions in court, with leaders like Bobi Wine and Paulson Luttamaguzi rejecting the judiciary as captured, while others like David Rubongoya and Fred Nyanzi opt to challenge results legally. Past court losses and allegations of bias fuel skepticism among opposition figures. The National Unity Platform (NUP) is grappling with a key decision: whether to challenge disputed 2026 election results in court. While party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, dismissed judicial recourse, citing a captured judiciary, some members are pushing forward with petitions.

Outgoing Nakaseke South MP Paulson Luttamaguzi echoed Bobi Wine’s view, refusing to contest his loss to NRM’s Charles Kawuma despite claims of massive rigging linked to Salim Saleh. He argued that court petitions only diffuse public anger. Pre-election warnings about suspicious polling stations in Namunkekeera, a restricted area, were ignored by the Electoral Commission.

In contrast, NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has filed a petition against NRM’s Minsa Kabanda in Kampala Central, alleging vote inflation at military-linked sites like Summit View. Fred Nyanzi plans to challenge his Kawempe South defeat to Madina Nsereko, questioning the margin.

Rose Nalubowa has petitioned the Masaka High Court after her woman representative win was overturned in favor of NRM’s Justine Nameere. Her team previously sought a judge’s recusal over NRM ties, highlighting distrust. Claims persist that President Museveni influenced the magistrate.

Historical precedents weigh heavily. NUP lost all 2021 petitions, including Fred Nyanzi’s failed challenge against Muhammad Nsereko despite an appeal granting a retrial. NRM candidates have succeeded in overturning opposition wins, like in Soroti West.

Opposition voices in Entebbe decry no real voting occurred amid Special Forces Command presence, with NUP’s Joyce Namuli Nabatta losing to NRM’s Stephen Shyaka Gashaija. This split reflects broader doubts about judicial impartiality.
