Uganda’s Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, issued a strong warning to Muslim leaders in the West Nile region against turning mosques into personal savings cooperatives or Saccos. Speaking at the launch of Halaal farmers’ centres in districts including Arua, Koboko, Yumbe, Moyo, and Adjumani, he clarified that mosques belong to the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council and must serve collective interests, not individuals.

The Mufti highlighted how internal conflicts among religious leaders hinder progress and development within the Muslim community. He appealed for unity, stating that collaboration, rather than division based on identity, is key to advancing both the faith and the nation.

During his visit, Sheikh Mubaje inspected ongoing mosque projects in Arua, donating Shs10 million through Matugga Industries and Logistics Hub for their completion. He praised the community’s proactive approach and urged transparent handling of funds.

The Halaal farmers’ centres, a partnership with Matugga Industries, aim to provide Muslim farmers with certified agricultural inputs, better market access, improved food security, and enhanced livelihoods. Fiona Migadde, the company’s executive chairperson, announced plans to establish 87 such centres nationwide to combat fake products in the market.

Sheikh Mubaje commended the peaceful recent electoral processes among Muslims, countering negative stereotypes linking the community to violence and portraying Islam as a religion of peace and love.
