Makerere University’s College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology (CEDAT) is hosting a two-day training program for more than 250 construction workers, technicians, artisans, and students. Supported by Hima Cement, the initiative targets key weaknesses in Uganda’s building industry, including adherence to codes, site safety, metalwork, and plumbing skills.

Participants, including first-year engineering student Alinda Larry Musiimenta, shared how the sessions are reshaping their understanding of the discipline required for safe construction. Musiimenta highlighted the importance of attention to detail, interpreting drawings, and effective communication between teams and supervisors.

Discussions emphasized protecting nearby communities, such as keeping children away from work sites. Leonah Nekusa, Hima Cement’s Brand and Communications Manager, stressed the need to link classroom learning with practical on-site skills for those already in the field.

This effort comes as Uganda’s construction sector grapples with frequent building collapses and accidents due to poor workmanship and lax standards. Experts call for closer collaboration between universities, industry, and informal workers to professionalize practices and cut risks.
