Makerere University Admits 1,672 Students on Government Sponsorship for 2026/2027 Academic Year
Makerere University has admitted 1,672 students under the government sponsorship scheme for the 2026/2027 intake, a slight decrease from the previous year's 1,732. The adjustment allows other public universities to share the national 4,000 scholarships more equitably. Makerere University has confirmed the admission of 1,672 students on government sponsorship for the 2026/2027 academic year, set to start in August 2026. This number, announced by Academic Registrar Prof Buyinza Mukadasi, marks a small decline from the 1,732 slots allocated last year.
Prof Mukadasi explained that the reduction is not alarming, as it enables newer public universities to access the limited 4,000 annual government scholarships. Makerere, as Uganda’s premier institution, still receives the biggest portion.
Other universities’ allocations include Kyambogo University with 750 slots, Makerere University Business School (MUBS) at 388, Gulu University (235), Mbarara University of Science and Technology (205), and 100 slots each for Mountains of the Moon, Muni, Kabale, Lira, Soroti, and UNITE.
Cut-off points for admissions remain steady year-on-year, with Prof Mukadasi highlighting improved overall student performance. Examples include 48.3 points for Bachelor of Business Administration (both genders), and 50.6 for female students in Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering versus 48.4 for males.
