In Luweero’s vibrant markets, mobile phones are indispensable, buzzing with customer calls and mobile money notifications that sustain daily trade.

Traditionally, these devices handled basic transactions without deeper tracking, leaving entrepreneurs without clear financial records for growth.

The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), partnering with Out-Box Uganda and Mastercard Foundation, launched the ‘Business Ku Ssimu Yo’ campaign. This effort, part of the 10X programme, urges traders to view their phones as complete business platforms.

The initiative promotes separating personal and business finances, consistent mobile money use, and retaining digital funds to create interpretable transaction histories.

Such data is crucial as lenders increasingly rely on digital footprints for credit decisions, especially for those lacking collateral.

Targeting financially vulnerable young women—including refugees and persons with disabilities—in sectors like agriculture, trade, and manufacturing, the programme aims to reach 61,000 by 2027, creating opportunities for at least 34,000.

These practical shifts promise to transform how Luweero’s small businesses operate and scale.
