A 46-year-old man from Ntungamo District has been committed to the High Court for trial over the murder of his neighbor, stemming from a dispute over land.
Alex Kwatirayo faces charges of killing Robert Kahigi on September 8, 2025, in Kijubwe, Kayonza Sub County. According to court records, Kwatirayo ambushed Kahigi as he walked home with his wife Annet Mbabazi and three children near a grazing area. He allegedly used a machete to attack Kahigi while fending off the family with a stick.
Kahigi was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries hours later. Locals intervened, prompting Kwatirayo to flee the scene.
Senior State Attorney Laudel Twinomugisha informed the court that investigations were complete and sufficient evidence existed for trial. Grade One Magistrate Edgar Kakuru ruled to commit Kwatirayo to the High Court for the next available session.
Kwatirayo has been on remand for six months. The incident arose after Kahigi fenced off a village path on his land, forcing neighbors like Kwatirayo to take longer routes. Court documents note Kwatirayo was assessed as mentally fit to stand trial despite some concerns.
This case highlights escalating tensions from land conflicts in the area.
