Enterprise Uganda has teamed up with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to roll out an export readiness training initiative tailored for Ugandan business owners eyeing opportunities in Europe.
Around 100 entrepreneurs, selected for their established operations and export potential, are participating in this hands-on program. Enterprise Uganda’s director general, Charles Ocici, emphasized that it’s designed for seasoned players ready to step up to international trade.
“This is not for beginners. These are entrepreneurs who have been in business but now need to move from the junior league to the premier league of global trade,” Ocici stated.
The sessions, delivered in small groups by international trade experts, cover key areas like contract negotiation, compliance with EU standards, litigation, financing strategies, and bankable business plans. Participants are also learning to tackle trade barriers, protect credits, and build trust through consistent delivery.
UNIDO deputy representative Andrea Carapellese highlighted Italy’s direct funding for this private sector project, adopting a bottom-up approach to meet entrepreneurs’ real needs.
Organizers point out gaps in product packaging, branding, and operational consistency as major hurdles for Ugandan exporters, despite strong production quality. The training addresses these to boost competitiveness.
This effort forms part of a three-year nationwide program including workshops on marketing and intellectual property. Success will be gauged by sustained export growth and better market access.
