Dr. Peter Mubiru, a radiography specialist at Happy Doctors Africa Health Services, was fatally assaulted on April 19, 2026, in Bagala Zone, Goma Division, Mukono Municipality. The attack occurred around 7pm as he walked home, with assailants on a motorcycle striking him on the head with a blunt object.

He suffered severe head injuries and was declared dead at Mulago National Referral Hospital. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, intelligence operations led to the arrest of four suspects: Mususwa Abubaker, Olowo Joshua, Muyanja George, and Basibu Umar. They will face court once investigations conclude, including recovery of stolen items and a post-mortem.

Residents reported that the robbers took Mubiru’s backpack containing a laptop and mobile phone near an abandoned church used as a criminal hideout. Local boda boda riders and figures like Dr. David Wamaani highlighted a pattern of street attacks in less busy areas, with at least three similar incidents in the past year.

Crime has reportedly worsened since recent evictions of street vendors, prompting calls for more police patrols after dark. Bugoba village chairman Billy Ssematimba blamed poor street lighting for security gaps. Medical colleagues mourned Mubiru, who was nearing a master’s in radiology and served multiple facilities, noting the scarcity of such specialists in Uganda.

Police data for 2025 shows 7,863 robbery cases nationwide, down 3.7% from 2024, though aggravated robberies rose 6.7%. Mukono division recorded 157 cases, amid higher figures in Kampala areas.
