Members of Parliament held a special sitting on April 22, 2026, chaired by Speaker Anita Among, to pay respects to the late Hon. Helen Nakimuli, former MP for Kalangala District. The gathering drew current and former legislators, political figures, religious leaders, diplomats, and Nakimuli’s loved ones, cutting across party lines.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja led the tributes, hailing Nakimuli as a diligent and bold voice who spotlighted the struggles of Kalangala’s 84 islands. Vice President Jessica Alupo portrayed her as a practical leader focused on solutions rather than empty words, bridging divides to tackle real issues.

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi called for accountability reforms to avoid similar tragedies, describing Nakimuli as a true patriot. Speaker Among praised her broad influence in politics, community work, sports, and gender advocacy, noting her unifying nature despite NUP opposition ties and her calm demeanor that won widespread admiration.

Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi condemned online attacks on the deceased, urging civility. Lawmakers united in recognizing Nakimuli’s tireless push for better ferry services, healthcare, and education in remote island areas. Her career evolved from community development officer to shadow minister in agriculture and ICT.

Nakimuli passed away on April 19, 2026, at Alexandria Medical Centre after surgery complications. The House approved a motion by Hon. Peter Ogwang for each MP to contribute Shs500,000 toward her 13-year-old daughter’s education. Additional donations included Shs20 million from President Yoweri Museveni, Shs10 million from the Buganda Caucus and Speaker Among.

Speaker Among urged restraint on death speculations, noting the post-mortem report was given to Nakimuli’s parents. She will be laid to rest on April 23, 2026, in Luwero.
