A somber mood enveloped Uganda’s Parliament on the morning of April 22, 2026, under gloomy skies, as preparations were made for the arrival of the remains of Hon. Helen Nakimuli, the late Woman MP for Kalangala District.

She had passed away on April 19, 2026, at a private hospital in Kampala. At 10:00 AM, Speaker Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua, Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama, and other MPs received the casket at the South Wing parking.

The arrival of her father, Reverend Father Christopher Walusimbi of the Orthodox Church, and family members stirred deep sympathy among the mourners.

Known as a passionate sportswoman who captained Parliament’s Women’s Volleyball team and played netball and basketball, Nakimuli’s hearse was escorted by the sports fraternity, who formed a guard of honor from the main gate.

Dressed mostly in black, crowds filled the Parliament foyer where her remains lay in state for viewing, with many shedding tears.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker offered condolences to the family and signed the book of condolences.

Just days earlier, on April 15, Nakimuli had passionately questioned State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang in plenary about Uganda’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, pressing for timelines on stadium preparations like Hoima.

Her remains were set to return to the House at 2:00 PM for legislators to pay final tributes.
